Rumor has it that when “Rec” was screened atthe Venice Film Festival, spectators were fleeingin fear only 15 minutes into the film. Describedas a mix between “The Blair Witch Project” and“Night of the Living Dead”, “Rec” is told throughthe lens of local TV cameraman Pablo. Workingalongside his reporter-colleague Andrea, theyare filming a squadron of fire fighters on duty.Called to rescue an old lady who is trapped in herapartment for unknown reasons, their segmentgoes from an everyday report on the routinesof firemen to capturing something monstrous, starting with the old lady taking a bite out of oneof her rescuers. Trying to leave the building, theydiscover that the authorities have sealed it off,due to a flesh-eating disease that is rampantlyspreading among the tenants. Sustaining thefeel of a news report by using Andrea’s narration and Pablo’s handheld camera with grayish lightand only stains of color, directors Plaza andBalageró make the horror unbearably tenseand immediate.
