During the 90’s, when the home video market gained popularity throughout Africa, the indigenous Nigerian movie business exploded. Today Nigeria’s film industry, called Nollywood, produces 1 400 films every year, making it the largest in the world. With low budgets and limited theatrical distribution, the digital format is the only realistic production option.
Like filmgoers around the world, Nigerians desire stories and characters they can relate to rather than cheap imported television shows. After the end of the military dictatorship in the late 90’s, demand for role models with a similar cultural background increased.
Peace Mission is a documentary tour through the country’s vibrant, creative movie landscape. We get to hang out at exciting film locations and Nigerian-celebrity hot spots, as well as meet all the key players in the industry. This is not a nation of dependency. This is Nollywood.
