Parking

by Chung Mong-Hong

Chen Mo is going to dinner with his wife to try and save their relationship, when he finds his car trapped in the parking space. In his attempts to find the owner of the doubled-parked vehicle blocking him, the young man enters a nearby apartment building where he stumbles across a series of problem-ridden characters. The motley line-up includes a one-armed barber, a mourning family and a tailor that owes money to the local gangster.

Parking uses flashbacks to tell the history of the different individuals. Director Chung Mong-Hong tackles the theme of identity, and his film brings together characters from Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, highlighting the historical tensions between the three areas. With surreal imagery and loads of black humor, Parking is a meditation on the urban chaos of Taiwan’s capital Taipei and the human predicaments of life.
