A luxurious gated community in the south of France looks like paradise from the outside, but holds an insidious serenity. This is a would-be idyll for the Nail family and their teenage son Toni. Meanwhile, wealthy newcomer Paul Hammer, introduced with an unsettling and fragmented narrative, struggles with an ambiguous need to be a part of the community lifestyle, while demonstrating hatred towards the mannered need for exclusivity. The definitive solution, Hammer realizes, is to destroy the mendacious atmosphere, preferably by crucifying the young Toni Nail.
Arnaud Des Pallières takes on the John Cheever book Bullet Park in a highly original way. The scenario is set in France, but with the typical oversized American middle-class mansions, golf courses and swimming pools intact from the original novel. The film moves effortlessly between stories, time periods and characters, with visual and musical attributes in a direct relationship to Lynch and Antonioni. Balancing two intersecting stories, Parc results in a complex and disturbing modern tale.
