Outside Love

by Daniel Espinosa

In his second feature, Daniel Espinosa showsus a dark and run-down Copenhagen wherehostilities between Muslims and Jews areseething. The 27-year-old daydreamer andsingle parent Shmuli (David Dencik) driftsaround all day with his son and confusedfriend Weinberger, not doing much besidesworking every now and then to save up moneyfor his life-long dream of going to New York. His employment as a security guard at a Jewishschool surrounded by barbed wire is abruptlyput to an end when Shmuli gets into a fight withhis employer. His quest for a new job bringshim to a corner shop and its Pakistani keeperAmina. Love strikes, but is far from complicatedas neither his nor her family approves. Withsombre colors and a shaky camera, Espinosatells a tale of love and reconciliation where no one thought possible. Remarkable acting fromDencik, in addition to the image of Copenhagenas a small Palestine, make the film quite anexperience.
