Set in a post-Iraq war environment, Nick Lovetells the story of Bryan, an emotionally-woundedsoldier returning home to find Britain in a sadstate. With help from a police officer (playedby veteran Bob Hoskins) and a security guard,Bryan starts to hunt criminals to make surethey will never cause trouble again. Soon joinedby other men, Bryan realizes that others sharehis quest. The moody, bleak colors effectivelyunderscore the violence of the story and thefast-paced camerawork. Said to be “The FootballFactory with guns”, referring to his appreciatedfilm from 2004, Love is never unclear about hisfrustration with how the Blair administrationhas handled street crime. Though you couldobject to his solution – that more violencesolves everything – this British “Taxi Driver”asks questions impossible to avoid today. The screenplay, based on newspaper stories andanecdotes from people all over the UK, confirmsits necessity.
