Freewheelin’ sex games, blood-soaked terror and high-octane action. These are the main ingredients in Australia’s very own film wave from the early 70’s. When the censorship turned from rigidly repressive to remarkably progressive, Australian genre cinema exploded virtually overnight. And the results are miles away from your average smooth, strait-laced Hollywood production.
Director Mark Hartley maps out the much mythologized Australian film renaissance with some help from those who were there at the time. Actors, producers and directors give us their view on how the sudden pop of the Ozploitation cinema affected Australian culture as well as worldwide cinema. Gore-friendly film guru Quentin Tarantino contributes by enthusiastically explaining how much this genre means to him as a director. And combined with the documentary’s countless film-clips of death-defying stunts, creative violence and full frontal nudity, the influences resonate loud and clear.
