Encapsulated by headphones in a privatedigital soundscape, teenager Lavinia Smartboards a late night train, oblivious to thefact that a gunman has just massacred thecar’s passengers. She makes the shockingdiscovery as the train departs and the eventsthat follow obscure in her memory. Meanwhile,at another train station, Police ConstableGraham McGahan collapses in an escalatorafter months of recurring blackouts, laterdiagnosed as severe tinnitus. In the huntfor the murderer, the fates of the frightenedteenager and the constable soon intertwine. With feature film debut “Noise”, directorMatthew Saville provides a different type ofcop protagonist. The tinnitus-ridden ConstableMcGahan stands in sharp contrast to thesturdy police officers of most crime fiction. His struggle with tinnitus underpins the generalsense of frailty and emptiness that permeatethe world of “Noise”. A ferocious high-frequencytone surfaces in the soundtrack during theviolent tinnitus episodes, giving the audiencea persuasive first hand experience of theaffliction.
