Eric Khoo, the director of the critically acclaimed Be with Me, returns with yet another heartfelt story from the, film-wise, relatively unexplored country of Singapore. “My Magic” follows divorced bartender Francis, whose life is on a downward spiral. He spends most of his time stumbling around in a drunken haze, picking fights. At home, his ten-year-old son has to carry the burden of his father’s woe and heavy drinking.
When Francis suddenly realizes the seriousness of the situation, he decides to improve himself and build a decent life for his son. He begins a career as a fire-eating magician, and manages to convince his boss to let him perform the impressive repertoire of perilous tricks on the bar’s stage.
But My Magic is not a film about stage-magic as such. Rather, it was created out of Khoo’s desire to portray a father-son relationship. Suffice to say, the subtle and tender chemistry between the actors is enough proof that he has succeeded commendably.
