Mr. Nobody

Mr. Nobody

by Jaco Van Dormael

Part fantasy film and part romance, Belgian director Jaco van Dormael's "Mr. Nobody" is an exploration of the road - or roads - not taken. Focusing on Nemo Nobody, it examines the myriad choices he has made between the ages of 0 and 118 and their resulting consequences. The film starts in the early 80's when nine-year-old Nemo's parents divorce, and, in the story's pivotal scene at a train station, he is forced to choose whether to hop on the train to go with his mother to the United States or stay with his father in England. The story shuttles through decades, all the way to 2092, when Nemo, like the hero in Robert Frost's classic poem, looks back and decides that this event is the one that may have made all the difference. But unlike Frost's poem, "Mr. Nobody" provides parallel storylines for the various directions in which Nemo's life plays out. The interlocking trinity of chance, choice and potential underlies each alternative take of Nemo's progression through adolescence and adulthood and into old age. ARVID JANSSON
