It should come as no surprise that Gareth Edwards’ feature debut is a realistic take on an alien invasion. A look at his resume reveals impressing work, both as a special effects designer and in the field of documentaries – talents that come in handy when creating a dystopian depiction of Earth some years after the visitors have landed.

Andrew is a cynical journalist based in Mexico, who is in for a challenge when trying to escort a tourist to the American border. Their journey takes them through deserted landscapes, inhabited by extraterrestrial creatures. Why were these aliens not welcomed in the first place? Can their hostile behavior possibly be explained with our initial reactions?

Edwards leaves many questions unanswered, delivering a contemplative science fiction that has more in common with Tarkovsky than your average creature-feature.

Monsters can be seen as an allegory of Western immigration policies, a reflection on earthly xenophobia. Still not in the mood for social analysis? – If not, you can simply turn off your intellect and enjoy one of this year’s most suspenseful rides.
