In the early 80's, before the police cracked down on it in a series of clean-up raids, the Monga district in Taipei was a breeding ground for trouble – where local hustlers, racketeers and pimps ran the show.
When Mosquito, the outsider protagonist, is transferred to a school in the neighborhood, he encounters Dragon, the son of the local triad boss who takes a liking to the new kid and adopts him into the Prince Gang. Mosquito falls in love with a prostitute and as time passes, the gang finds itself sinking deeper into the criminal life. The original bonds of friendship are strained as new, darker motifs and bigger fish enter the scene. When faced with internal strife and threat from a mainland gang headed by Crazy Wolf, played by Niu himself, Monga becomes a battleground for survival.
In a savvy display of narrative genre bending, Doze Niu splits the film in two halves as he lets the epic coming-of-age tale about camaraderie and the romantic life of delinquent youngsters transform into a darker, bloodstained saga of violence and misery.
