Michael Jackson meets Marilyn Monroe at a car show in Paris. She brings him along on her trip to the Scottish castle she inhabits with her husband Charlie Chaplin and daughter Shirley Temple. Writer and director Harmony Korine’s colorful absurdist third feature follows the daily routines in the lives of celebrity impersonators. Diego Luna stars as a lonesome young man who spends his life as Michael Jackson, a talented undiscovered performer whose encounter with Monroe opens up a whole new exciting world: a community of impersonators. With Michael Winterbottom’s cinematographer, Marcel Zyskind, Korine turns his back on the dogma-influenced aesthetics of his earlier works and makes the subtly sad and humoristic “Mister Lonely” a pleasure to watch. Just like in his debut “Gummo”, his love for marginal misfits shines through in every blissful scene of this weird visit to the Harmony Korine fantasy wax museum, where nuns fly and the Pope jumps into bed with the Queen of England.
