Miss Kicki

by Håkon Liu

"Miss Kicki" is an exploration of the emotional wasteland between a distant mother and her teenage child. After twelve years in the United States, Kicki, a middle-aged woman who fills her inner void with cheap-o wine and nervous laughter, is reunited with her teenage son, Viktor, living in Sweden. In order to make up for lost time, Kicki brings Viktor on a vacation to Taiwan under the pretense of their getting reacquainted. But Kicki's online romance with a Taipei businessman is also coloring her decisions. What starts as picture-postcard scene of Taiwan is soon flipped over, revealing the blank page of their relationship. Mother-son bonding doesn't quite pan out. Viktor, striking out on his own, befriends Taiwanese teen Didi, while Kicki, too nervous to make an in-person move with her cyber partner, spends the days drinking at the hotel. Both characters struggle in this alien landscape, left with nothing more to depend on than their backpacks full of personal problems. SEBASTIAN LINDVALL
