The beauty pageant contestant Laura Guerrero unwillingly discovers the reality of violent Mexican drug cartels. She has one dream—to become “Miss Baja California”. One night when Laura is out partying with a couple of Drug Enforcement Administration agents, the criminal gang “The Stars” starts shooting at everyone in sight. Luckily, Laura survives. Because she is a witness to the massacre, the drug lord captures her and forces her to join them. The director’s long takes provide little time for the relief that rapid cuts might facilitate, allowing fear to grow among the audience. This combined with the world directly shown from Laura’s point of view, makes a powerful effect. »Miss Bala« addresses the brutal drug violence and corrupt police force that plague Mexico.
