Michael Moore, the indignant masterof docutainment is as provocative as heis humorous. Titles such as “Bowling forColumbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11” have broughtMoore fame and fortune worldwide as well asmassive critique from the right-wing media. Thecritique can also be heard from Moore’s ownprofession. The success of his films has broughtthe attention of liberal filmmakers Rick Caineand Debbie Melnyk, who, in “ManufacturingDissent”, set out to discover the truth behindthe Academy Award winner. While mimickingMoore’s documentary techniques, Caine andMelnyk present several uncertainties about theagitator and his morals and throw suspicion onMoore. The Canadian duo reflects on Moore’spublic persona and on his documentary form.Based on interviews with old colleagues, enemies and supporters, and following Mooreon his tour, “Manufacturing Dissent” usesMoore’s own rhetoric to try to show that he hasmore in common with the stupid white men thanhe would admit.
