Máncora

Máncora

by Ricardo de Montreuil

Haunted by his father’s sudden suicide, 21-year-old Santiago decides to leave Lima and head north for the surfer paradise of Máncora. Just in time for his departure, the long-absent stepsister, an attractive Spanish photographer named Ximena, with her brash husband, Iñigo, unexpectedly pays him a visit. The trio takes off together, and as the trip evolves, tension runs high due to Iñigo’s jealousy over the bond between Santiago and Ximena. By the time they reach Máncora, their boundaries are already being crossed. Heavy partying, resulting in a confused relationship between the siblings, strains the situation further.
Ricardo de Montreuil’s pulsating road-trip drama is filled to the brim with illicit desire, while tenderly tracing the emotional borders between the characters. With energetic pacing and a fluent visual style, the film not only captures the complicated relationships, but also provides a picture of the unexplored coastline north of Lima.
