Handsome Magnus is not tormented byanxiety; he has just decided very thoroughly todie. After (un)luckily surviving an overdose, hewaits for the right moment to really end his life. After a trip to the wilderness, Magnus moves inwith his corpulent father. The depraved but bigheartedman, who recruited women for Germanporn in his son’s childhood, now tries his bestto reach his obstinate son. Despite the suicidalframing, 26-year-old directorial talent KadriKõussar made her skilled debut feature into afilm less about death, and more about life andwhy we live it. Estonian pop star Kasearu shinesin the sad title role. Mart Laisk anchors the filmas Magnus’ father. Off screen, Laisk’s real sonhad wanted to commit suicide, which addedanother layer to his brave, honest performance. The smudgy, brown-tinted imagery contrasts to Magnus’ colorful parents.Filmed on digital HD video and with a minimalbudget to avoid depending on public or privatefinanciers, “Magnus” is the first Estonian filmto be completely independently financed. Forthe cast and crew, this was a first venture intofilmmaking.
