Los Angeles based gangs The Crips and The Bloods have for decades been two of the most notorious criminal affiliations in the world. Over the years, their constant clashes have caused five times as many casualties as the conflict in Northern Ireland. These crews grew, together with organizations such as The Black Panthers, from what was initially a fight against the powers that be. But somewhere along the line, the African Americans turned on each other. When guns and drugs entered the scene, fights were transformed into massacres.
Critically acclaimed filmmaker and pioneering skateboarder Stacy Peralta brings us a distressing, historical account of the gang culture in Los Angeles. It is a dark picture of a frightened society obsessed with violence. Through a collage of stock footage, interviews, photographs and graphic designs, we are confronted with the very roots of the problem, being the constant abuse and marginalization of the African American community. To these disturbing images Peralta has set a calm narration and a cool, laidback soundtrack, addressing the urgency of the issue.
