A taxi drives off the road, killing its driver. The surviving passenger, a beautiful and mysterious woman, moves in with the deceased driver’s family to recuperate and heal her broken leg. The newcomer immediately makes herself at home, and slowly the relationships within the household starts to mutate. A destructive friendship between the stranger and the confused teenage son, struggling to cope with the terrible loss of a father, soon develops.
We follow the emotional development and activities of the characters through director Yibai Zhang’s sensitive eyes. Harsh, unfriendly environments and pale colors constitute the framework for this well-crafted drama. Slow, steady camera shots from afar, often with objects in the foreground, create the effect that the viewer is peeping in on the confused threesome as their secrets unfold. The seemingly random, voyeuristic scenes and trivial situations lean heavily on documentary aesthetics, making the story that develops highly believable and intriguing.
