Lost in Beijing

Lost in Beijing

by Yu Li

Set in contemporary Beijing and accompaniedby Peyman Yazdanian’s exquisite piano score,“Lost in Beijing” approaches the problems ofmodern day Chinese society in a somewhatsuggestive mode. The film portrays two couplesforced to cooperate, as Lin Dong, played by HongKong cinema-vet Tony Leung, gets his employeeLiu pregnant. Leaving the betrayal aside, thefilm takes on power structures and a problemof monetary kind: How much is a child worth? Ina gloomy apartment in the rough part of Beijing,Liu’s husband, Xiaomei, tries to overcome hiswife’s betrayal by seizing the unwanted situationas an opportunity to climb out of poverty.Director Yu Li follows up her stylish “DamStreet” with a somewhat different visualapproach. With a handheld camera andcrisp colors, Li paints a low-key portrait of a metropolis that seems surprisingly empty.“Lost In Beijing” passed the Chinese censorsuncut and was screened at this year’s BerlinFilm Festival.
