The Zone

The Zone

by Rodrigo Plá

Within a poor society there is a separatewealthy residential zone, an example of the“gated communities” being built around theworld. In the community, the inhabitantsmanage law and order themselves.Closedcircuitcameras patrol and monitor, protectingthe residents from the less-privileged on theother side. Then, one stormy night, a hugebillboard cracks and falls against a fence, forming a bridge between the rich enclave andthe poor world outside. A fumbled robbery andthe death of an old woman ensue. Fearful oflosing their privileged legal status, the residentschoose to cover up the crime, brutally killing twoof the intruding boys and arranging a lynch mobto hunt for the surviving 16-year-old.In his powerful debut feature, director RodrigoPlá paints a devastating picture of a rigidlytiered society in Mexico City, willing to sacrificeall values and liberties in the name of their ownsecurity. “La Zona” rings the alarm about theshape of things to come in a world where thegap between rich and poor has become somassive that it splits people into two camps, each deadly scared of the other.
