“The thing with fathers is that you want tobelieve them. And if you can’t believe them, youat least want to be with them”. The words of 16-year-old Miranda, played by Rachel Evan Woods, puts the finger on what this heartfelt story isreally about. Michael Douglas gleams under theCalifornia sun as the wild-bearded father whohas just gotten out of a mental institution. Hisdaughter Miranda has managed his absence byselling Big Macs. Now she tries to manage herfather’s crazy behavior, but can’t help thinkingit was better before he came home. Still, slowlyshe’s being dragged into his adventurous worldand the obsessive hunt for a 17th centurySpanish treasure, in a last attempt to keep theirfamily of two together.Writer and director Mike Cahill creates afantastic adventure and mixes it with the story of a father-daughter relationship fightingto survive. There are references to both DonQuixote and to Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”.Michael Douglas is at his best.
