Jerusalema

by Ralph Ziman

Ralph Ziman returns to his native soil of South Africa for a hardcore film based on actual events, set in the dying years of the apartheid regime. But the filmmaker, who started his career directing videos for heavy metal stars, has no intent of glamorizing the gangster ways of Johannesburg’s street thugs. He focuses on the characters and how they evolve through the events.

Lucky knows what he wants out of life: a BMW, a house with a sea view, a beautiful wife. But since he’s a poor South African living in a ghetto, the road to riches is not easy. Lacking the funds to attend university, he steals cars to try and climb the financial ladder. Eventually, Lucky ends up in Hillbrow, the crime capital of the world. He discovers that there’s money to make from these poverty-stricken people, and forms an association that collects rent from tenants living in rundown apartments. Lucky then withholds the cash from the neglecting slumlord until he fixes the place up. He’s Robin Hood on the block, but soon the racist police force and the local mob lords catches on, and all hell breaks loose.
