7–18 november 2012

Using beautiful 1950’s styled photography, Mabrouk El Merchi tells the somewhat tragic life story of The Muscles from Brussels. Behind the acronym JCVD lurks none other than Jean-Claude Van Damme, playing himself in this half-fact, half-fiction satire. Going on 50, Van Damme is a washed-out action star who, instead of battling bad guys on the silver screen, spends most of his time fighting his own agent, his ex-wife and the IRS. The poor guy is broke, is losing custody of his daughter, and the movie offers aren’t that sweet any more. And yet, things get worse. Van Damme suddenly finds himself in a middle of a hostage situation following a bank robbery, with the police, as well as his fans, surrounding the place.
In a back-and-forth narrative, El Merchi and co-writers Frédéric Bénudis and Christophe Turpin give Van Damme lots of space to actually act for once. The Belgian superstar responds with one of his finest efforts to date.
