A murdered man in a smelly apartment, a childwho died 30 years ago and a grieving employeeat a genetic research institute. These are theseemingly disparate elements of major Icelandicsuccess “Jar City”, based on the award-winningnovel by Arnaldur Indridason. The worn superintendent Erlendur, a manwith a messy personal life and a partiality forboiled sheep heads and knit sweaters, is theanti-hero who has to fit the pieces together. His investigation raises old crimes, tragediesand secrets to the surface. Kormákur has kepthis movie refreshingly free of fancy crime labsand cool detectives. Instead, we are presentedwith a grey and rainy Iceland, often majesticallycaptured with widescreen lensing, rawhumorous dialogue, skillful acting, and – mostimportantly – a thrilling story that aspires to be more than a detective mystery. It stays with youlong after you’ve solved the murderer’s name.
