As a child, Jack Brooks witnessed a monsterkill his family, and has ever since suffered fromguilt and outbursts of violent anger. As he tellshis shrink: I once broke a bottle over my headwhen I couldn’t open it. Working daytime asa plumber, Jack attends an evening scienceclass with his obnoxious girlfriend Eve. Teachingthe class is professor Crowley, played by horrorfilm icon Robert Englund (a.k.a. Freddy Kruegerfrom “A Nightmare on Elm Street”) – a consciouscasting winking it’s little horror-loving eye to thetradition. When Jack is hired by Crowley to cleansome clogged pipes, something evil awakens.Buried in the garden is a black heart that forcesits way into the professor’s body and turns himinto a monster – via a period of hysterical eatingand throwing up in class. Fighting off this newthreat, Jack learns the best way to calm his anger is to aim it at the monster. Splatteringblood ridiculously all-over-the-place and withstylized characters – from the elderly oddballtelling stories about curses to Jack’s flannelshirt and worn Adidas hat – “Jack Brooks:Monster Slayer” mixes suspense with lots ofunderlying humour.
