At the height of his career, having acted in films such as »Walk the Line«, »Gladiator« and »Two Lovers«, Joaquin Phoenix made a bizarre appearance on »The Late Show« with David Letterman in 2009. He showed up in an ugly beard, wearing sunglasses, appearing very strange as if he was on drugs. He announced that he wouldn’t act in any films in the future and that he was about to start a career as a hip-hop artist.
A couple of weeks later, Casey Affleck told the press that he had been filming a documentary about Phoenix' new career, his life of drugs and prostitutes and his journey towards the bottom. Even though the documentary was recognized as a hoax shortly after its first screenings, it must still be regarded as an impressive piece of art.
Joaquin Phoenix was totally absorbed by his role, acting as the aspiring hip-hop artist Phoenix 24/7 while his convincing acting fooled the entire world. This is one of the true great impersonations in our film history, as ambitious as Jean-Pierre Léaud's role as Antoine Doinel and as intriguing as Christian Bale's characterization of Alfred Borden.
