Convinced that she is a military cyborg,Young-goon electrocutes herself badly in orderto “recharge” her batteries. After the seriousincident, she is sent to a mental institutionto recover but she refuses to eat, convincedthat her batteries will provide enough energy.Among the other patients, she encountersnewly admitted Il-soon, a young kleptomaniacwho believes that he can steal other people’spersonalities, and the two engage in a romance.Young-goon hopes to take advantage of hernew-found boyfriend’s capabilities by lettinghim capture her emotions - thereby enablingher to go on a shooting spree to retaliate againstall the evils in life. Meanwhile, her conditiondeteriorates from undernourishment. After his success with the dark Vengeancetrilogy,Park Chan-wook returns with a work in a different vein. “Cyborg” is unique in its setup: aromantic comedy telling a tragic story of mentalillness. Employing magical realism and dreamsequences to describe the inner mindscape ofthe patients, Chan-wook refines his alreadyextravagant cinematic style.
