7–18 november 2012

With only four days remaining until his release from prison, the young offender Silviu finds out that his mother, gone since eight years, has returned and plans to bring his younger brother back to Italy, where she came from. Refusing to see this happen, Silvius’ four last days turn in to a panicked inner struggle. Adding to his inner turmoil, he falls in love with a young sociology student who may be his way out.
Based on a play by the Romanian author Andreea Vălean, If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle is just as actor driven as it was on stage, which is remarkable knowing that George Pistereanu, playing Silviu in the film, was just an ordinary high-school kid with no previous acting-merits.
In fact, a large part of the cast are real life inmates from a juvenile penitentiary, and their authenticity complements the naturalistic cinematography, creating a raw psychological drama, in which tensions build slowly towards an inevitable point of eruption.
