Inspired by Ridley Scott’s film “The Duellist”from 1979, Belgian director Micha Wald tellsthis flaming epic story about revenge, survivaland sibling love with images of vast flat landsand lots of fast-paced horseback riding by youngCossacks in loose-fitted, colorful clothes. Inthe middle of the 19th-century somewhere inEastern Europe, two pairs of brothers struggleto survive a harsh and poor society. Jakuband Vladi fight to become soldiers in a cruelenvironment where they are molested andbeaten; Elias and Roman steal horses for aliving. Each set of brothers is bound by ties ofguilt and responsibility, and in both cases theolder, wilder brother is countered by a younger, more innocent sibling. One day their paths cross, and one of them is brutally killed, beginninga feverish chase for justice and inner peace. Inspired by the samurais of Akira Kurosawa’smovies, Wald pushes his characters to the edge, leaving them with only a yearning for revengeto hang on to.
