A family of five is living in a carefree isolated paradise in rural France. Far from the stress of big-city life, they are a harmonious, playful group. The only sign of modern civilization is a closed-down freeway next to the house. When this endless stretch of concrete reopens one day, life suddenly changes. Refusing to leave the house, the family members delve deeper into seclusion. In the process, they all risk both their mental and physical health.
In this quirky drama, director Ursula Meier penetrates the family and the constant outside threat to its structure. Seen from the perspective of these isolated people, the freeway, with its many passengers, becomes an anonymous, noisy entity of its own.
Award-winning actor Isabelle Huppert puts her own special spin on the neurotic mother. Together with Olivier Gourmet, she makes a duo of two loveable, yet unstable, parents who try to lead their flock in a crisis.
