Holy Rollers

by Kevin Asch

A series of strange events in the late 90's that got producing actor Danny Abeckaser working on the script that would eventually become Holy Rollers. A group of Hasidic Jews had been uncovered smuggling ecstasy for an Israeli drug dealer in Brooklyn. Abeckaser's own recollections of growing up as an orthodox Jew, and the fact that it is based on a true story, lends "Holy Rollers" highly authentic qualities, though the film is always kept dramatic.

The young Sam Gold, faced with arranged marriage and religious studies to become a Rabbi, starts questioning the strict ways of his family and community. Matters take a turn for the drastic as Sam's kind neighbor Yosef introduces him to the drug dealer Jackie. Sam initiates a secret career smuggling ecstasy from Amsterdam, making use of the business talent his father Mendel never recognized at the family's small Manhattan fabric store.

Sam gets swept away and descends deeper into a troubled double life destined for collision, unevenly illuminated by the newfound relationship with his female sidekick Rachel.
