First-time feature director Gabe Ibáñez serves upa visually enthralling thriller about a young womannamed Maria who, on her way to the island ofHierro, loses track of her five-year-old son, Diego.Police investigations into the disappearance areto no avail, and Maria returns home alone. Sixmonths later, Maria is called back to the islandto identify the body of a young boy believed tobe her son. Refusing to accept that the body isher son's, she launches her own investigation ofDiego's disappearance after spotting a young boyresembling him on the beach.
Effectively balancing a whodunit mysterywith a profoundly disturbing character study,Ibanez deftly takes the audience inside Maria'sincreasingly fractured mind as she startsto see conspiracies all around her and vividnightmares begin to plague her. Following inthe aesthetic footsteps of PAN 'S LABYRINTHand EL ORFANATO , cinematographer AlejandroMartinez infuses the film with a Lynchianoddness - sinister corridors, Jungian symbols, and mysterious animals - creating a stunninglyatmospheric film.
