In the Swedish TV-series "Hem till byn", which ran for 36 years, actor Carl-Ivar Nilsson played a disgruntled gas station-owner, who's love life, marriage, and later on alcoholism became the highlight of many Swedes weekly TV-routine. To all outward appearances Nilsson was a success, but his private life was overshadowed by a secret that was not to be revealed, even to his closest family and friends, until 1985.
In "Hemligheten", his son, filmmaker Pontus Hjorthén, travels back in time to explore this secret, and on a more personal level to re-examine the complicated relationship between father and son.
With great cinematic inventiveness "Hemligheten" mixes archive material with new footage in its exploration of the secret life of Nilsson. Interviews with some of Sweden's biggest actors, like Rickard Wolf, represent the most conventional part of "Hemligheten"; a film anything but conventional in either cinematic style or subject. Narrated by Hjorthén, it also becomes a fascinating personal journey.
"Hemligheten" will have its world premiere at the Stockholm International Film Festival.
