7–18 november 2012

After the unanimously acclaimed and awarded drama "Vera Drake" (2008), celebrated British director Mike Leigh returns to the screen with a positive comedy. This is a big step away from the filmmaker’s usual trademark of social-realistic working class portrayals.
In Happy-Go-Lucky we meet Poppy, a chirpy and carefree primary school teacher who does her best to brighten the day for everyone she meets. The film revolves around her life and the people she comes across: a driving instructor that turns out to be Poppy’s complete antithesis, the wry and stalwart roommate Zoe, and the tango-dancing colleague, Heather. All together, they make a colorful spectrum of original characters.
Appearing in nearly every scene, leading lady Sally Hawkins manages to create a rich portrayal of the unfazed optimist Poppy. For her effort, she was awarded the Silver Berlin Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008.
