“Hallam Foe” takes place on a rooftop inEdinburgh. A man, with great talent for spyingon people, reveals his darkest fears and hismost peculiar desires. With his mother’sstrange death (suicide or not?) in mind, he isdriven to expose the real truth, but finds himselfsearching for true love. To the sound of a hipindiesoundtrack, director David Mackenziedives into the psyche of a screwed-up teenagerin this adaptation of Scottish journalist PeterJinks’ debut novel. He combines moods, notablyforeboding and breezy comedy, just like a greatHitchcock movie with one part mystery, one partthriller and one part romance. CinematographerGiles Nuttgens uses impressive, claustrophobichow-did-he-do-that-camerawork, which showsthe world from Hallam’s eyes and an Edinburghcity far from tourist promotion. Young Jamie Bell (famous for the leading part in “Billy Elliot”), inthe role of Hallam Foe, makes a moving portraitof a troubled soul coming to terms with his owndemons.
