7–18 november 2012

The garbage-infested streets of Naples are the setting for this alarming tale about a society on the verge of collapse. In five seemingly disconnected stories, we witness how the criminal organization Camorra, in a blood-drenched quest for money and power, controls the everyday life. The ruthless gangsters command the actions of the protagonists and a downward spiral ensues, leading towards a seemingly inevitable failure for everyone involved.
Matteo Garrone’s venture into the world of organized crime is one of the most authentic crime films ever made. Gomorrah is the very antithesis of the Hollywood depiction of the American mafia. Instead of stylish entertainment, we are faced with the grim reality of the suburban underworld. Here, cinematic glamour is replaced with a documentary touch, achieved through the use of hand-held cameras and sparing music.
This urgent film is based on a 2006 non-fiction bestseller, written by journalist Roberto Saviano. Since the issue of the book, Saviano is forced to live under constant police protection, due to the Camorra’s death threats.
