Gloss: The Director's Cut

Gloss: The Director's Cut

by Andrei Konchalovsky

After posing in a second-rate ad in the local paper, small-town seamstress Galya leaves her fatuous boyfriend and unchallenging job, and goes to Moscow to make it as a supermodel. But she is entering an industry full of cold-hearted fashion designers, criminals and snotty magazine editors, with their equally snotty daughters. At first everything is glossy and shiny, but soon the uglier sides begin to show.

Veteran filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky has designed a fast-paced, satirical look at the Russian fashion industry. The director ups the ante, taking the subject beyond The Devil Wears Prada, and more in the direction of Zoolander.

The director’s cut version of Gloss is released more than 40 years after Konchalovsky’s first movie, and almost 30 years have passed since his international breakthrough with Siberiade. Gloss was shot in only two months, and is co-written by Konchalovsky and Dunya Smirnova. The leading role of Galya is played by Konchalovsky’s wife, Yuliya Vysotskaya.
