This LA crime story, complete with thearchetypical private investigator, rainy nights, femmes fatales and voice-over narration livesup to its title but also refreshes the genre’svisuals by being animated, with the occasionalin-blending of real footage of sinful Los Angeles.Protagonist Sam is in serious trouble; he iswanted by the police for murder and heavyarmedmercenaries are trying to kill him. Ontop of that, he suffers from amnesia. As themanhunt goes on, Sam tries to fit the piecestogether only to find out that people know himnot as Sam, but as a sleazy scumbag namedDavid Hudson, who trades in blackmail andpornography and has a passion for sadism. The more he finds out about himself, theless he likes the man. The voice of the hero isactor Mark Keller, who is also behind the jazzy soundtrack. The mostly monochrome animationmixes pop art drawing influenced by artist RoyLichtenstein with modern 3D-animation and isonly accentuated with bright colors highlightingblood and traffic lights. True to the film noirgenre, the film has dramatic shadow patterningand extremes angles, like the ones seen fromthe barrel of a gun.
