Filmmaker Mike Judge - the undisputed king of 90's comedy alongside Kevin Smith - seems to have no intention of creating characters any more intelligent than those starring in his breakthrough show, "Beavis and Butt-Head".
In "Extract", we encounter decent-but-bored Joel, owner of a small bottling plant specializing in producing food extracts. Causing daily headaches are his misfits employees, who not only find it difficult to adapt to their surroundings in general but who are also prone to seriously injure themselves - or their boss - if left unsupervised. Things are not much better on the home front where Joel struggles with a lifeless marriage to a wife who gets a greater thrill out of designing supermarket coupons than from spending time with her husband.
With "Extract" as a thematic companion piece to Judge's cult classic "Office Space" - which looked at the struggle between labor and capital from the other side of the desk - Judge is once more in the business of social satire. His laughs do sting in this world where blue-collared inanity reigns.
