It has been much too long since we last saw Brazilian gravedigger Coffin Joe, but finally the trilogy that José Mojica Marins started in the 1960’s is complete. Joe’s quest is to find the perfect woman to bear his son, but only a top notch specimen will do. Therefore he seduces a lot of ladies, mainly based on their religious devotion, while female ghosts from his past haunt him. Coffin Joe finds himself struggling with morals, beliefs, surrealism and sadism.
Marins’ budget is bigger than ever, but this film is rife with the same spiders, snakes, gore, atheism and psychedelic colors as always. This time, highlights include cannibalism and a woman crawling out of a pig’s carcass. The director, actor and writer is a true horror legends, in the same league as Lon Chaney and Vincent Price. With love and passion, Brazil’s most notorious horror profile is exorcising his own misanthropic visions in an aggressive and exotic fashion.
