7–18 november 2012

German director Jochen Hick has found yet another place and time for his favourite subject: gay men. With his highly subjective camera, Hick tracks the violence connected to the Moscow Pride Parade. The contempt for the Russian homosexual community is fierce, not just among the common people, but also on a higher political level. In 2006 and 2007, the Mayor of Moscow banned the event. Hick meets with the organizers of the Pride Parade and draws a map of the conservative views regarding sex and gender issues in the former Soviet Union, his main goal being to test the country’s young democracy. Painfully, the director succeeds in uncovering more prejudice than one would think to find in a 21st century nation.
This documentary presents a unique reality check, as we are given a look on the inside of the world of Russian homosexuals, and what it is like to exist in a society steeped in old homophobic values. Filmed on location in Moscow, London and Brussels, it is also a portrait of modern day Europe, whether we like it or not.
