In his avant-garde feature debut, whichmade Variety Magazine name him one of tennew directors to watch in 2007, Taika Waititibalances hysterical situation romcom andprofound truths about life and love. “Eaglevs. Shark” maximizes the quirkiness factorfollowing the tribulations of socially awkwardlovebirds Jarrod and Lily, and their journeytoward accepting themselves and building asemi-functional relationship. Geeky Lily worksat a shabby burger joint and is secretly obsessedwith the unsympathetic übernerd Jarrod, whois employed at the videogame store in the sameshopping mall (played by comedy phenomenonJemaine Clement, one half of HBO’s comedyshow “Flight of The Conchords”). Jarrod, initiallyunaware of Lily’s romantic interest, is tryingto win the icy heart of her bimbo colleague. But when Lily shows up in a shark costumeat Jarrod’s animal-themed videogame party –which he hosts as the almighty Eagle Lord – heresponds hesitantly. A pubescent-esque sexualencounter begins their shared path to selfactualization,on which Jarrod’s dysfunctionalfamily and his revenge quest on a high schoolbully play central parts.
