In recent years, South Korea has establishedits own cinematic aesthetic through the workof acclaimed directors such as Joon-ho Bong,Chan-wook Park and Ki-duk Kim. With hisfeature film debut, “Driving with My Wife’sLover”, director Tai-sik Kim expands on theirvision and creates his own. The film revolvesaround Tae-han, a stamp engraver whodiscovers that his wife is having an affair with acarefree taxi driver named Joong-sik. Insteadof confronting his wife or her lover, Tae-hanhires Joong-sik for a long-distance taxi rideand the two men set out on a summer road tripthrough the South Korean countryside. Tai-sikmixes the mellow plot development that hascome to characterize the new wave of SouthKorean cinema with colorful imagery filled withsymbolic elements. In doing so, he has created a film that shows the complexity of humanemotions and social relations, as well as theimportance of contemporary Asian cinema.
