Maria Bello, known for her lead in David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence, plays the part of depressed housewife Nancy. She has nothing in her life besides a failed marriage to coldhearted husband Albert, so she decides to commit suicide with the help of a hired assassin. But a plain murder is not enough for self-destructive Nancy. Rather, she wants someone who is willing to torture her physically, emotionally and sexually, before death. Online, she finds an eager candidate in Louis.
Inspired by a true story, acclaimed music video director Johan Renck delivers a dark and provocative first feature film. The Swedish debutant uses recurring close-up camera angles to create an uncomfortable, sometimes explicit, path throughout the story line. This is a truly disturbing film, destined to split worldwide audiences in two: for, or against. There’s no middle ground when it comes to this haunting display of a woman with nothing but self-loathing.
