With only days left before getting married to Sam, Steph surprises her fiancé by delivering to him his estranged brother Tom, a struggling artist still living with his parents. At a first glance, Sam – a vegetarian with a great big beard and intense enthusiasm for organic gardening and bycicling – seems to be the more likeable character, but quickly proves himself to be a bully: ”You keeping busy doodling?”
At dinner Sam and Steph hear that Tom can't bring a date to the wedding because he hasn't been in love since 5th grade. Upon hearing this, Sam proposes a road trip through California to find Tom's long lost crush. The journey commences and while finding Tom's girl proves to be more difficult than expected, Sam fully adopts the role of the douchebag and tension grows.
Douchebag is this year's most pleasant surprise from the mumblecore genre, distinguishable by its theme of twenty-something-year-olds in limbo and use of extremely low budgets, hand held cameras, improvised scripts, and non-professional actors.
