Annika is a charitable and attractive woman in her early thirties, managing a popular dance school together with her mother. Thanks to a technical mishap she meets Lasse, an electrician, and soon love is in the air. But Annika’s new man suddenly starts to confess some disturbing facts from his past, including a prison sentence, without revealing all the details. She tries to ignore his menacing, darker sides but can’t help but suspect that something is seriously wrong, a notion confirmed by Lasse’s increasingly aggressive attitude towards her.
After her 2006 success with A Soap, filmmaker Pernille Fischer Christensen develops her theme of the destructive, deceitful sides of love. With ascetic aesthetics and a powerful performance from Trine Dyrholm as the amiable but naive Annika, Dancers is a heavy drama that doesn’t shy away from the big questions. Is it really possible to love someone who has committed an unforgivable crime?
