Taking the attitude “If I can’t have her, no oneelse can” to the extreme, Klores journeys backto the 50’s to portray the true love story of richNew York lawyer Burt and charming Bronx girlLinda. When they meet, Linda is enchantedby Burt’s exciting lifestyle and his romanticcourting, which includes trips in his privateplane. But when Burt turns out to be marriedand the father of a sick child, Linda leaves him. This marks the beginning of the violent drama:Burt hires three men to throw acid in Linda’sface. His decision and Linda’s ensuing blindnessare the sad dramaturgical peak of this story ofpassion, jealousy and years in jail. The story wascovered thoroughly by the tabloids and the news, enabling Klores’ extensive use of archive footagethat he mixes with interviews of the couple andtheir friends. The too-bad-to-be-true events are embedded in a great 50’s soundtrack and Klorestells the story with a thrilling suspension thatintensifies the feeling of a truth stranger thanfiction. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell onYou” has never been as frightening and sad.
