World-renowned photographer AntonCorbijn’s feature film debut revolves aroundpost-punk pioneers Joy Division and singerIan Curtis’ suicide. It is only logical that Corbijndirected this film. Inspired by Joy Division’salbum “Unknown Pleasures”, he left Hollandin 1979 and moved to London where he took thefamous tube station shot of the band turningtheir backs on the camera. He also made thevideo for Joy Division’s “Atmosphere” afterCurtis’ death. A form so strict and controlledthat it’s about to explode links Corbijn’s strongphotography, Curtis’ life and Joy Division’smusic and claustrophobic beauty. Without beingsensational, “Control” depicts the events thateventually lead to Curtis’ suicide in 1980 at age23. Feature film debutant Sam Riley makesa ghostly interpretation of Curtis through his chaotic and brief career, starting out as a 17-year-old fed-up with small town life. As timepasses, he is increasingly haunted by epilepticfits and torn between family life and a new love. The film is a tender portrait of a longing to breakout of a too-small world and was based on thebook “Touching from a Distance” by Curtis’ wifeDeborah.
