Control

By Anton Corbijn

World-renowned photographer Anton Corbijn’s feature film debut revolves around post-punk pioneers Joy Division and singer Ian Curtis’ suicide. It is only logical that Corbijn directed this film. Inspired by Joy Division’s album “Unknown Pleasures”, he left Holland in 1979 and moved to London where he took the famous tube station shot of the band turning their backs on the camera. He also made the video for Joy Division’s “Atmosphere” after Curtis’ death. A form so strict and controlled that it’s about to explode links Corbijn’s strong photography, Curtis’ life and Joy Division’s music and claustrophobic beauty. Without being sensational, “Control” depicts the events that eventually lead to Curtis’ suicide in 1980 at age 23. Feature film debutant Sam Riley makes a ghostly interpretation of Curtis through his chaotic and brief career, starting out as a 17- year-old fed-up with small town life. As time passes, he is increasingly haunted by epileptic fits and torn between family life and a new love. The film is a tender portrait of a longing to break out of a too-small world and was based on the book “Touching from a Distance” by Curtis’ wife Deborah.
